  • There have been cases of sharks reproducing asexually through parthenogenesis
  • The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish in the world
  • Younger whale sharks are actually quite gentle and can play with divers
  • A group of sharks is called a gam, grind, school, herd, pod, collage, or shiver.
  • Shark don't have bones; they have cartillages
  • Some sharks can survive in freshwater.

  • The earliest known sharks date from more than 420 million years ago.

  • There are two documented cases where female sharks who has not been in contact with a male conceived an offspring. However, It's considered a last-ditch effort as it diminishes genetic diversity. Asexual reproduction may have contributed to the blue shark's decline off the Irish coast

  • The whale fish, although the biggest species of fish known today, feeds on algae, plankton, krill, small squids, crab larvaes, and other small organisms.

  • Shark species that can survive both in freshwater and saltwater are bull sharks and river sharks

  • Sharks have rows of teeth that keeps growing forward with the front row ones falling off. Depending on the species, the replacement could take 8 to 10 days to several months. Although, the teeth are replaced one at a time instead of simultaneously

  • It is estimated that 100 million sharks are killed by people every year, due to commercial and recreational fishing.
